    RE: TOURNAMENT LAYOUT

Tim and I were discussing some possible tournament formats that would be of interest. When you think about the standard PDGA format of 2 rounds a day, 5 people per basket, there's no way around the 5+ hour round almost no matter what course(s) you're playing. This format is obviously very popular due to the huge turnouts at PDGA events -- that's fine.
I would be interested in a couple of formats that are popular but not really available locally in no particular order:
Match Play -- this is done in several places throughout the country. South Vineland would be good for this since there are so many baskets you could make the first 2 rounds about 10 baskets each round. The problem with match play is finding a way to have anyone left at the end. There's several different formats -- one that's of interest is fitting a round of random draw just before the finals with part of the entry fees to give everyone a second chance at money.
USDGC style -- have a 2 day, one-round-a-day tournament with tee times, lots of OB/par 4's and 5's, island greens, etc. Between Landis and South Vineland it wouldn't be rocket science to mimic some of the Winthrop baskets. Maybe make the round actually play on both courses.
A team event. Team events are extremely popular -- think VTI, Texas Teams and I think there's one in California that's very popular. Run a smaller version of these events to see if there's any interest. Maybe have smaller number of players per team like 4 and limit it to a manageable number -- of course what makes the current events so popular is the camping aspect. How disc golfer camping friendly South Vineland is I don't know -- but it may work.
Just thinking out loud -- the PDGA format is very popular but I'm guessing it's going to be quite a while before I sign up for that due to limited amount of playing you get to do for the time you're at the course. It's a very popular format so I'm not saying that it should be changed -- it's just not for me.

    RE: TOURNAMENT LAYOUT

    paul,
Tim and I, as well as Bob Graham and Matt Lacourte, have considered the idea of a matchplay championship for NJ.  I think we are trying to host it at SoVi.
We are also still considering some type of NJ series so that people can get incentives to play most of the big events in NJ.  We have enough courses and players now so we should be able to pull it off.
I"m really liking the USDGC style.. YOu actually are thinking of stuff I've already thought about and discussed with others .  My idea was to have a SUMMER SAFARI SHOWDOWN at the end of the summer. The top players from the NJ series or from our Series would get to play a Safari Layout (or all players who enter) and it would highlight SoVi as well as be ridiculously LONG.  Hopefully it would make for some good competition and spectating.
and also We are going to host a Doubles Event at some point this year.  I am going to call it DOUBLE TROUBLE.  Our initial dates for this event were going to be may or june, but I believe that I've pushed it back into October.

We still have a 2 day PDGA tournament, a 10year anniversary Ctier for Landis, A Doubles tournament, Uncle brian's Cleets to the Face Open, and at least the Safar Showdown.

keep in touch with me Paul as I like your ideas and I like being able to talk with other people in the area to get stuff going.

I think we are going to try for 4-26 for the spring fling.  Tim is thinking 1 round, but i'd prefer 2.. we just won't play 21 holes each. LMK

    RE: TOURNAMENT LAYOUT

I didn't really mention a doubles event -- that's a good idea, I'd be much more interested if it mimicked World's doubles instead of the usual best disc stuff we play.
World's doubles includes alternate shot, best score, worst shot and best disc. It just adds some new components instead of the same-old same-old. I've played in some of the worlds' doubles events and it definitely adds to the interest -- the rules are published on the web so it wouldn't be hard to copy.
Just more thoughts -- I know, ideas are cheap - it is a message board afterall . ..
Back to the USDGC style thing -- why not have it the same weekend as the USDGC . . . ?? It's not like that many locals go to Rock Hill.

    RE: TOURNAMENT LAYOUT

that is true and that's right in october.. not too far into the year.. weather would still be decent for south jersey.  I was hoping to have the event as a type of finale for the summer league, but I could see having it then.
If we did that I could move the doubles event into August 16th which would be the last day of WORLDS.

I have to go to work soon (5-11), but Keep in touch. I enjoy the conversation and "cheap ideas"

    RE: TOURNAMENT LAYOUT

If you look at Winthrop, many of the baskets rely on out of bounds, etc. Landis would be perfect to mimic some of these baskets.
One of Winthrop's more impressive baskets is a par 5 along a lake with the lake on the left -- we'd have to reverse basket #2 but it could easily match up to the Winthrop one. The hay bale basket at Winthrop could easily be matched up over by where current #18 at South Vineland is. Winthrops also famous for "888" which could probably be mimicked with either the driveway at S.V., or the basket over by the warehouse at Landis . . . . I like the idea of  9 baskets at South Vineland and 9 baskets at Landis -- you'd just have to drive from one to the other after the turn.
If there aren't that many players we could make sure that each group had someone that was familiar with all the OB stuff to keep it moving, etc.
